The History of D.A.R.E. and the Alburtis Program
D.A.R.E. –Drug Abuse Resistance Education – is an innovative program designed to prevent substance abuse through education. The program was developed in California under the auspices of the Los Angeles Police Department in association with the Los Angeles Unified School District. The D.A.R.E. program began with ten trained police officers in California. Today, the D.A.R.E. program is being taught in 80% of the school districts nationwide and in 54 countries around the world. The D.A.R.E. program is positively impacting over 36 million children worldwide. The Alburtis Police Department, in conjunction with the East Penn School District, implemented D.A.R.E. in Alburtis Elementary School during the 2006-2007 school year. The Alburtis Police Department currently has one officer dedicated to teaching the D.A.R.E. program at our elementary school. Officer Raymond J. Bulger, known at “Officer Ray” by the students, has been teaching the program since its inception. When Officer Ray is not teaching the D.A.R.E. program he works in the patrol unit where he interacts with present and past students in a positive manner. Officer Ray, along with the support of the Borough of Alburtis, Chief Robert Palmer, parents, teachers, administrators, students and local businesses, make the D.A.R.E. program what it is today. During its short life of 3 years, the D.A.R.E. program has reached out to and instructed 524 students. The Alburtis Police Department and its Officers will continue on their mission to reach as many young people as possible, as they are our future.
