This year millions of school children around the world will benefit from D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), the highly acclaimed program that gives kids the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence. D.A.R.E. was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles and has proven so successful that it is now being implemented in 75 percent of our nation's school districts and in more than 43 countries around the world. D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives.

 D.A.R.E. Program

 Overview

The Alburtis Borough Police Department, in conjunction with the Alburtis Elementary School, is presenting a drug and

violence education and prevention program titled D.A.R.E. at the school.

The acronym D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education.  The aim of the program is to equip youth with the

skills to resist the peer pressures of experimenting with and the use of harmful drugs.

One of the unique features of the D.A.R.E. program is the use of Police Officers as instructors in the classroom.  This

has helped to forge a positive relationship between officers and youth of the community.

The D.A.R.E. lessons focus on four major areas:

  • Providing accurate information about alcohol and drugs

  • Teaching students decision making skills

  • Showing them how to resist peer pressure

  • Giving them some ideas for alternatives to drug use and violence

 The D.A.R.E. program also:

  • "Humanizes" the Police, so that the young can relate to officers as people

  • Lets students see officers in a helping role, not just an enforcement role

  • Opens lines of communication between law enforcement and youth

  • Opens dialogue between the school, parents and Police to deal with other issues

  • D.A.R.E. officers can serve as conduits that provide information beyond drug related topics
